BSANORTH SCITUATE TROOP 2
WHITE MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE V
Hypothermia – occurs at 50 degrees or below. Mt. Washington (lakes) had snow and 48 degrees in August 2004. No jeans, sweatshirt, or cotton anything. When wet- cotton wicks your body’s heat away. We were lucky last year – no rain.
Lightning – very common in WMNF during the summer, cold fronts drop in without warning. We will be crossing “thunderstorm junction” on route.
Bears – are present in the WMNF. There has not been a bear attack in years. All food must be stowed when not being eaten.
Moose – are everywhere in the WMNF. Do not feed them or show aggression and you will be fine.
Black flies/mosquitoes – 2005 trip was first time we encountered insects. Repellents with “deet” are a must.
Foot/ankle/knee injuries – 10 miles in and 1 mile up is no time to be injured. Quality hiking boots, careful foot planting and poles are good prevention measures. Don’t forget – careless injuries not only ruin your trip but also the people who must help you down the mountain.
Drinking water – Filter, iodine or boil your water. Giardia lamblia is everywhere. Check with your doctor before using iodine pills.
